Name einer hethitischen Stadt, die kurz vor Überflutung durch den Stausee von Tabqa am oberen Euphrat in Syrien bei dem damaligen Dorf Meskene 1972 ff. ergraben wurde. Die französischen Ausgräber legten von der am Hang gelegenen terrassierten Siedlung des 14./13. Jahrhunderts Wohnhäuser, einen Palast (mit Verwaltungsfunktionen) und vier Tempel frei. Nach dem Zeugnis der Tontafelbibliothek von Emar mit Keilschrifttexten war Emar, ebenso wie nach anderen Quellen, im späten 3. und im 2. Jahrtausend v. Chr. ein wichtiger Umschlaghafen. Unweit wurden Befestigungsanlagen der hethitischen Stadt Aschtata freigelegt. Von den Ruinen der als Nachfolgesiedlung von Emar auf einem Plateau gelegenen mittelalterliche Stadt Balis (Barbalissos) ist das oktogonale Ziegelsteinminarett aus aijubidischer Zeit, im 13. Jahrhundert n. Chr. über quadratische Sockel errichtet, durch Versetzung an das südliche Ufer des Stausees gerettet worden.
